Affordable Kitchen Countertops

March 15, 2013

Do you want to have a kitchen that looks elegant and stylish, but you don’t want to pay the expensive prices for marble or granite countertops?  Are you wondering if there are any alternatives to real granite and stone countertops?  It doesn’t matter if you’re building a new home or remodeling a home, designing a beautiful kitchen is important for families that spend a lot of time cooking or entertaining.  Granite countertops add beauty and distinction to any kitchen, but are not an affordable option for everyone.  Options for inexpensive countertops ideas include laminate, solid surfacing and polymer slabs.  Another marble-like countertop is made from paint.  These materials can also be used for back-splashes.

Laminate

Laminate countertops in today’s age offer enhanced performance and look very realistic.  They cost much less than granite.  Laminate is non-porous so you won’t need to seal and reseal.  Even though laminate is wear-resistant, it’s not as durable as stone.  However, it’s substantially less expensive than granite.  The cost of laminate is approximately $20 to $50 per square foot while the cost of granite is approximately $100 to $225 per square foot.

Solid Surfacing

Solid surfacing is manufactured from plastic resin composites.  It’s available in a variety of colors and patterns.  It can be shaped into many shapes and sizes.  Solid surfacing is also non-porous and is stain and impact resistant.  The cost is approximately $75 to $120 per square foot.

Polymer Slabs

Polymer slabs are granite-like sheets made from mixing stone with a specially formulated polymer.  You don’t have to demolish you’re existing kitchen if you’re remodeling.  The slabs are custom-cut and installed over existing countertops.  Having the countertops installed over your previous countertops saves a lot of time.  The slabs are made to resist scratches and stains.  The cost is approximately $53 to $75 per square foot.

Granite Paint

Granite paint is painted on to existing countertops.  Each paint kit comes with painting instructions.  Paint kits are available in a variety of colors that look like real granite.  One paint kit costs approximately $70.  Each kit covers 35 square feet of countertop.

As you can see you don’t have to break your bank account to have an upscale kitchen.  With these inexpensive countertop ideas, you will give your kitchen an elegant charm.    Now you’re ready to start picking out colors and decide which option is best for your family’s needs.  Determine which option fits your budget and begin your kitchen’s transformation.
