Cinco de Mayo is this coming Sunday and we would like to take the opportunity to help celebrate this Mexican tradition. While many people seem to believe that Cinco de Mayo is the Mexican Independence Day, it’s actually the day of the Mexican army’s victory over the French army in the Puebla State. In observance of this holiday many people celebrate Mexican heritage and culture across the US and in parts of Mexico. Some additional facts about Cinco de Mayo include:
- In Puebla State, Cinco de Mayo is called El Dia De La Batalla De Puebla;
- Even though Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico, the holiday is mainly observed in Puebla and in the US it’s a popular holiday for celebrating Mexican culture and history;
- In Mexico and the US all Cinco De Mayo celebrations include mariachis, parades, and street festivals;
- September 16 is Mexico’s Independence Day and not May 5 like most people believe;
- In the US, the largest Cinco de Mayo celebrations are held in El Paso, Denver, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Francisco, San Jose, and Los Angeles.
Here in the city of Houston there will be two celebrations this weekend. The downtown Houston Cinco de Mayo Parade and the Houston Roxx – Music and Art Street Festival. The league of United Latin American citizens sponsors the Cinco de Mayo Parade each year. This is the parade’s 21st year and it will begin at 10 AM on Saturday at the intersection of Texas and Hamilton, and will end at Minute Maid Park around noon. The parade has more than 100 participants and includes floats, marching bands, classic cars, colorful dancers, and mariachis.
Lotus is sponsoring the Music and Art Street Festival. It is an urban street festival which celebrates the lower Washington Cultural Arts District located in first and sixth wards. At this street festival people can come together for a great cause and have an interactive art experience. Located on two city blocks which starts at the corner Washington Avenue and Silver Street, the festival will also provide live music entertainment.
This is a very unique and diverse street festival which is located in the perfect are of Houston. This area of Houston is known for its rich history, culinary dining experiences, unique shops, nighttime entertainment, and art studios and art galleries. Guests will also have an opportunity to participate in creating an art mural.
Enjoy this Cinco de Mayo weekend and stay safe.
