How to Properly Clean Tile Floors

Do you have tile floors in your home?  Are you looking for a more gentle way to clean your tile floors?  Do you wonder why your tile floors don’t look new any longer?  Whether you’re buying a new home or remodeling a home, taking care of your tile floors is important to keeping them looking newer for longer.

Tile floors will look new for many years, when cleaned properly.  Dirty grout is the reason your tile floors don’t look clean even after you’ve mopped them.  You need to clean your grout regularly as well.  You can make a gentle cleaning solution at home that’s affordable and easy to make.  With the purchase of a few supplies and by following a few simple instructions, you will be able to keep your tile floor looking new for years.

Supplies to make your cleaning solutions:

  • baby shampoo
  • a rag or chamois-type mop
  • baking soda
  • fresh lemon juice
  • stiff nylon hand brush
  • bucket
  • spray-bottle

It doesn’t matter what type of baby shampoo you use.  Don’t use a sponge mop, because it pushes dirty water into grout lines and makes the grout more difficult to clean.  Don’t use metal brushes either, because they will ruin your grout.

Mixing the mopping solution:

Mix 2 tablespoons of baby shampoo with 1 gallon of hot water.  Make sure you constantly change the water while mopping.  Mopping with dirty water will give your floors a cloudy look.  You don’t want to defeat the purpose of cleaning, do you?

Removing soap residue:

Soap residue can make your tile floors look dull.  If you have ceramic tile floors, you can remove the soap residue by mixing 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice with 12 ounces of water.  Rinse the tiles thoroughly and wipe them dry with a lint-free cloth.  Don’t use this on marble floors:  The acid from the lemon juice will ruin marble floors.

Cleaning the grout:

Make a paste like substance by mixing baking soda and water.  Rub the mixture on the grout and let it sit overnight.  Use a nylon brush to scrub it the next morning.  Now clean the tile with the cleaning solution.

You can also mix the cleaning solution and lemon solution into spray bottles.  This way you will have both solutions readily available for accidents and grout cleaning days.

Now you know the secret to keeping your tiles looking new for years.  Not only is it simple, it’s also affordable and environmentally friendly.
