How to Decide Between a Want and a Need When Buying a Home

July 23, 2014

Are you searching for a new home? Which style do you like best? Are you looking for one that features huge dining rooms, an elaborate outdoor space, a highly advanced entertainment room? All of us love features like these, but do not forget that they are also adding to your budget.  In many cases, as attractive as all the features seem, the truth is that we do not really need them. Here is how you can decide between something that is just a want and something that is a need.

A perfectly designed kitchen

We all want this one, but before we pay for it, there is a lot that needs to be considered. If you are cooking regular meals, you can do with any standard kitchen, but what if you have to cook for a party every other weekend or have your own home bakery to take care of? This is when your kitchen should be really elaborate; plenty of counter spaces, a high end range and other great amenities.

A huge dining room

Do you throw legendary dinner parties that are the talk of town? You need a huge dining room if you do. However, if your gatherings are small, comprising of just your family and close friends, you can do with a small dining room. Why pay for a big one, when it will remain empty and just get filled with dust most of the time?

An entertainment room

How do you mostly spend your nights? Locked away in your room surrounded by books, tablets or other things of your choice? Or out with your friends, partying the time away.  In the former case, an entertainment room might be a good choice for you. Or maybe you could install a sound system and set up a big display right in the family room itself.

On the other hand, if you are social and stay out most of the time, then you need none of this.

Number of bedrooms

How many bedrooms should your new home have? That depends on your future plans. For those of you who are planning to get married and look forward to being parents, you will need a nursery. What if you have a lot of guests year around? Guest bedrooms are what your home should have.
